Our second designer is Jana Hanzel, and while her aesthetic is different than Rachel's, there are some definite similarities. Both are based out of Ottawa, both started in disciplines other than fashion, both make gorgeous clothing. But while architecture often lends itself to fashion design, Jana's background is in computer science. Not so glamourous. That's what we thought, but "her math background and understanding of spatial geometry helps her to develop flawless and figure flattering patterns."

Figure flattering patterns aren't all you'll find in Jana's designs. Those of you who work 9-5 downtown will appreciate the exquisite tailoring in her collection. If "classy" and "elegant" are two words often used to describe you, you'll appreciate the unique but tasteful embellishments in her evening wear. As if providing work and play wear to the sophisticated women of this city weren't enough, Jana's also got a new project for anyone who thinks fashion should be fun and spontaneous: she's designing a collection inspired by the band Velvetbox! Classy, elegant, sophisticated and fun? You do not want to miss this show.

Being equally as nice as she is talented, Jana agreed to do a little Q&A so you faithful blog followers could get to know her a little better. Here goes:

Q:What made you decide to put away the computer and pick up the scissors as a full time profession?

A:Sometimes fate is stronger than life, some things basically happen whether you expect them or not.

Q:Do you have any advice for others who are passionate about something but too scared to commit to it as a career?

A:If you believe in your dream, go for it no matter how intimidating it seems at the beginning. If you don't believe in your dream strong enough, then don't bother to follow it.

Q:Outside of your private clients, who do you see wearing your designs?

A:Some celebrities have already worn my dresses. I worked with a lady, the wife of an Ambassador to Canada. They were posted to Europe last year and she asked me to design a small collection for her - to represent Canada abroad! I asked her why she doesn't just buy something in Europe directly and she told me that she'd like to have my name/label on her clothes. That was too sweet! It was very nice to work for her, I really enjoyed that one!

Q:Tell us a little about your new project: Velvetbox!

A:I've been asked to design a fashion line for that project. The Velvetbox project should embrace all different kinds of art - music, fashion, photography, to stimulate our senses on different levels at the same time. I like the idea, I understand art as a complex thing, so somehow this idea addressed my feelings very well. That's why I started the collaboration with the lead of the Velvetbox band, Lawson Carroll. We plan to launch the project next year.

Q:While your main line is stylish and sophisticated, Velvetbox seems fun and laid back. Can you tell us how Velvetbox's music inspired the line?

A:Lawson and I agreed that the line should reflect femininity, with ethnic touches, and luxury - fur and lace. We like the little gothic feel in it.

Q:What design accomplishment are you most proud of?

A:It’s most likely the collection that I did for The Ambassador’s wife. But I am very proud seeing my designs on other people, seeing them happy in their outfit. It's the most important thing - clients wearing my designs.

Q:What is your ultimate favourite outfit?

A:I love my purple coat with the hand embroidery at the back. It's stylish and warm, such a nice piece to be worn here in Canada! :-)

The range of Jana's talent is immense, and she's done everything from the Velvetbox collection to costume design. As if that isn't enough, she also designs accessories, like the posh hats in many of her photos.
She is currently designing for clients exclusively out of her studio, where she creates pieces based on your lifestyle, the occasion AND your budget. We predict she'll be busier than ever after this OFW, so take this as a hint to get on Jana's client list while there's still space!
